Tikehau Travel
Another well kept secret in the Tuamotu Archipelago is Tikehau. The oval shaped atoll is located about an hour by air from Tahiti and only 20 minutes from Rangiroa.
Tikehau was discovered in 1815 by the Russian navigator Kotzbue and he named it Krusenstern Island
When Jacques Cousteau's research group made a study of the Polynesian atolls, they declared the lagoon of Tikehau to contain the most fish.
Tikehau is the place for secluded beaches, incredible snorkeling and fantastic scuba diving opportunities. The miles of un-spoilt pink sand beaches, turquoise waters and hundreds of flat motus create an idyllic getaway for anyone who is searching for that "desert island" vacation.
The island has its own scuba diving club that offers excursions year round. Along with the incredible marine life, shipwrecks and cave diving add to the diver's experience
The main village of Tuherahera is situated on the south end of the largest motu. The 350 residents are friendly and very welcoming. The village is filled with pretty flower gardens and lots of fruit trees. The village has a post office, bakery and an infirmary but there is no bank on Tikehau. Tuherahera reflects the typical Polynesian way of life.
With the outrigger canoes available at the hotel, an easy paddle to a nearby deserted motu is a must. Here you can lie on your own secluded beach, enjoy a picnic and really get away from it all. Tikehau is the place for people in seach of authentic Polynesian hospitality!
